Take the Food for Thought Challenge!
Your tax-deductible donation supports an effort to integrate organic community gardens with hands-on education and farm-to-school programs in Ithaca, NY. For all ages!
Wood’s Earth Living Classroom supports the growing and sourcing and of healthy, local food for Ithaca area public schools by encouraging hands-on youth and collaborative community involvement in growing school food. On one half of our 2.5 acre site in the Town of Ithaca, diverse youth groups grow food for local school food programs. The production field shares efficient infrastructure and other resources with community gardeners cultivating plots on the other half of the site.
Some of our costs for 2013:
hand row seeder, seeds, soil amendments, cover crops, floating row cover, harvest and packing containers, outdoor classroom furniture, wheel hoe, hand tools, gloves, hand washing station, take-home materials, shed and driveway improvement materials, event and marketing expenses, and more…
We operate 4 programs: (1) School food production, (2) Youth education, (3) Community gardens, and (4) Farm-to-school system development.
Our most costly program is school food production; there are a variety of costs associated with growing organic produce. Our community gardeners and school food site share our infrastructure investments. As not-for-profit, tax exempt growers who sell produce for what schools can pay (typically at about one-fourth to one-third of the market value for organic produce), we depend on support from funders and sponsors like you!
There is a lot of great stuff in the works… stay tuned!
